Cryptomator, a client-side encoding tool for cloud files (and more), has received an important new release. The latest version 1.5.0 has a completely new user interface, a new storage format and several other improvements.

Cryptomator is a free open source Java utility that provides client-side encryption for cloud storage files available for Windows, Mac and Linux. There are also applications for sale for iOS and Android, an open source kernel (a business model for monetizing commercial open source software).

It works with cloud storage services that synchronize with the local directory, such as Dropbox, OneDrive (on Linux for example with the OneDrive Free client branch) and Google Drive (including Insync). You can choose to encrypt the entire storage space in the cloud or just a few important files in one or more stores.

It is worth mentioning that although the Cryptomator was developed with cloud storage encryption in mind, it can also be used to encrypt folders on your system or on an external drive.

Cryptomator uses client-side encryption, which means that your data is first encrypted and then synchronised with the online storage in the cloud so that no unencrypted data leaves your computer. Internally, Cryptomator uses FUSE, WebDAV or Dokany, depending on what you want to use, and the operating system to deliver an unencrypted virtual disk.

For encryption, Cryptomator encrypts both the content and the names of files using AES with 256-bit keys (an unlimited enforcement policy with native binaries), while protecting the passphrase from brute force attacks using Scrypt, a password-based key recovery function (designed for high-performance computing, so an attacker would have to perform this operation a billion times).

Cryptomator 1.5.0 Released With Redesigned User Interface, New Vault Format (Cloud Data Encrypter)
Cryptomator 1.5.0 with unlocked memory and open storage space in the Nautilus file manager (GNOME files)

The latest version of Cryptomator 1.5.0 comes with a full overload of theuser interface to simplify the download process for users. Unlock memory, Add memory and memory options have been redefined with, and a new option to change the password of memoryhas been added. Also in we improved the password entry with the Caps Lock indicator and the passthrough function.

There is also a new option to reset the storage password using recovery keys.

The redesign of the user interface also includes support for the new dark mode , but must be unlocked by purchasing a donation key that supports the development of the Cryptomator.

Here I would like to make a remark about the new user interface. On my Ubuntu 20.04 GNOME Shell desktop, the main window of Cryptomator cannot be moved by dragging the left mouse button, but only after unlocking the archive. If you have the same problem, hold down the Super or Alt key (depending on your desktop environment) and drag the window with the left mouse button to move it. I didn’t have that problem when I tried the Manjaro Kryptomator with Xfce.

Under the hood, Cryptomator 1.5.0 introduces the new storage format 7, which redefines the layout of encoded text files, and file names are encoded with base64url, making shortening of names less likely.

It is important to note that repositories made with older versions of Cryptomator need to be updated when the latest version of Cryptomator is used (and after that the repository will not work in older versions of Cryptomator). When you open a repository created with an older version of Cryptomator, you will see a button to update the repository.

Other changes to Cryptomater 1.5.0:

  • Enhanced drawer menu: added a list of memories, unlock and lock for each memory and the ability to lock all memories.
  • Adding right-to-left interface alignment support
  • Adding a compatibility check for the base file system
  • Added Auto-run configuration for Windows and MacOS
  • Adding a hidden startup parameter
  • Added configuration variable -Dcryptomator.minPwL length to set the minimum password length to the default value of 8 for GDPR compliance.
  • Better search for updates
  • Improved lock manager for automatic safe locking
  • Fixed compatibility with some Google Disk Sync clients where renaming long file names to short names did not work.
  • High fixed CPU usage under certain conditions
  • Correction of duplicates in the repository list
  • Linux :
    • Fix memory and processor overload in some versions of Mesa
    • Support for more than three simultaneous assemblies with FUSE
  • Windows : Fixed GUI crash and slow writing when using Dokany
  • Macos:
    • Removal of the Keystroke Acceptance Index on MacOS Catalina
    • Fixed a crash on MacOS Catalina when displaying a file selection dialog
    • Corrected when using FUSE when the unit is in stand-alone mode.
    • Support for more than three simultaneous assemblies with FUSE

Note that my Ubuntu 20.04 desktop with the GNOME Shell Cryptomator does not have a tray icon. The application had a symbol on the tray of my Manjaro Xfce test.

Download the Cryptomator

The download page contains Cryptomator binaries for Linux, Microsoft Windows and MacOS. The source is available at GitHub. The Cryptomator download page also contains links to Android and iOS application stores, but mobile applications are not free!

Under Linux, Cryptomator is presented as a common AppImage binary application that should work on any Linux distribution. To run it, create an executable .AppImage file (either from a terminal that uses chmod +x cryptomator-1.5.0-x86_64.AppImage, or from the file properties with your file manager), and then double-click AppImage to run it.

There is also a PPA (the curious AppImage packages, the difference is that you get automatic updates and an application menu item for Cryptormatoir) for Ubuntu and Ubuntu based on Linux distributions (Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, Elementary OS, Zorin OS, etc.) and the Arch Linux AUR package is available.cryptomator mac download, cryptomator issues, cryptomator api, cryptomator apk download, cryptomator android free, cryptomator icloud
